{"id":1160,"date":"2012-08-19T14:31:11","date_gmt":"2012-08-19T18:31:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/garykahn.net\/yoga\/?p=1160"},"modified":"2016-04-10T17:42:20","modified_gmt":"2016-04-10T21:42:20","slug":"iyengar-yoga-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/garykahn.net\/yoga\/2012\/08\/iyengar-yoga-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Iyengar Yoga"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Tammy,<\/p>\n<p>I went to my first Iyengar yoga class.<\/p>\n<p>Every pose was deliberate and held for a lengthy period of time.\u00a0 Blocks and belts were frequently used to help us with alignment.\u00a0 In savasana we put a padded bolster under us to be gentle to the spine.<\/p>\n<p>This is much different than the vinyasa flow classes where one doesn&#8217;t have time to ponder whether the alignment is right in any position.\u00a0 Do the pose and if you don&#8217;t get it, on to the next pose.\u00a0 Come on!\u00a0 We don&#8217;t have time to wait for you.\u00a0 Bolsters, blankets, and blocks.\u00a0 Are you kidding?\u00a0 Help?\u00a0 Help?\u00a0 Only the strongest make it to the advanced levels of yoga.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe Iyengar wrote his legendary book <em>Light on Yoga<\/em> to let people know that one can just do yoga and have the time to get it right.\u00a0 Maybe the Big I doesn&#8217;t want you sweating.\u00a0 Maybe this Guruji thought Joseph Pilates was an uptight dude and yoga should be an endeavor where your body and mind become harmoniously in sync.<\/p>\n<p>Gary Kahn<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Tammy, I went to my first Iyengar yoga class.
